Gentle Sleep Routines for Babies

Writer's picture: Caitlin PetersenCaitlin Petersen

Becoming a mom is a beautiful, life-changing experience, but the sleepless nights can be one of the most challenging parts of the journey. It’s important to remember that every baby is different, and finding a gentle sleep routine that works for both you and your baby might take time. As a mom of two little boys who are now past the baby stage, I know firsthand how challenging those early months can be. In this post, I’ll share gentle sleep routines for babies and tips to help you get the rest you need too - these are some things that worked for me.

Understanding Baby Sleep Patterns

Newborns have very different sleep cycles compared to adults. In the first few months, their sleep is unpredictable as their circadian rhythm (their internal body clock) hasn’t developed yet. Most newborns sleep 14-17 hours a day, including stretches of 2-4 hours at night before waking for a feed. By 3-6 months, many babies begin to consolidate sleep into longer stretches at night.

Gentle Sleep Routines for Babies

1. Establish a Calming Bedtime Routine

Babies thrive on routine. A consistent series of calming activities before bed signals to your baby that it’s time to wind down. A simple bedtime routine might include:

  • A warm bath

  • A soothing massage

  • Putting on cozy pyjamas

  • Reading a short story or singing a lullaby

  • Dimming the lights and turning on a white noise machine

2. Watch for Sleep Cues

Pay attention to your baby’s sleep signals, like rubbing their eyes, yawning, or becoming fussier than usual despite being fed. Catching these cues early can help you put your baby down before they become overtired, which often makes it harder for them to settle.

3. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Keep your baby’s sleep space calm and cozy. Ensure the room is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. A white noise machine can help drown out household noises and create a womb-like atmosphere.

4. Encourage Day-Night Awareness

Help your baby learn the difference between day and night by keeping daytime feeds and playtime bright and engaging, while nighttime interactions are quiet and low-lit.

Tips to Help Mom Rest Too

1. Sleep When the Baby Sleeps

You’ve heard it before, but it’s true: try to nap when your baby naps. Even short power naps can make a big difference in your energy levels. Adequate sleep is essential for new moms as it helps improve mood, boost energy levels, and also plays a crucial role in hormone regulation, which can aid postpartum recovery and help manage stress. While it might feel difficult to prioritize rest amidst the demands of caring for a newborn, even small naps can make a big difference, allowing you to feel more refreshed and better equipped to handle the challenges of motherhood. Try to set realistic and gentle expectations - It’s easy to feel pressured to do everything, but remember that taking care of your baby (and yourself) is the priority. Let go of non-essential tasks and focus on rest whenever you can.

2. Ask for Help

Don’t hesitate to lean on your support system. Whether it’s your partner, family, or friends, having someone take over for a bit can allow you to rest.

3. Stay Nourished and Hydrated

Fueling your body with healthy meals and staying hydrated can improve your energy and overall mood. Keep easy snacks and a water bottle nearby for quick access.

4. Practice Mindful Relaxation

When sleep isn’t an option, consider mindfulness practices like deep breathing or a quick meditation to help recharge your mind and body.

Be Patient with Yourself and Your Baby

Remember, it’s perfectly normal for sleep to feel challenging in the early months. Give yourself grace and know that it’s okay to try different approaches until you find what works best for your family. The sleepless nights won’t last forever, and you’re doing an incredible job navigating this beautiful (and exhausting) season of life.
